Stirling's . . .Favorite Kelowna DJ Spot gets plowed.

City staff came in one day last week and bull-dozed Stirling's Jumps. Thousands of hours of work obliterated because they were bike jumps. The probable theory that was a drinking and drug spot, garbage spread all around, evening parties, a definite deterrent for homeowners building or maintaining their homes on Dilworth Mountain. If “they're making bike jumps, they're probably of a bad ilk“. “Don't want those kids hanging around our neighborhood, they're up to no good.” I understand municipal laws, however it does not apply in this instance. These young men chose an area in the forest where no home could be built. They were not encroaching on any lots nearby. They were in the forest. These are the gentlemen whom we should admire, these teenagers who've snowboarded 50+ times this year at Big White, maintained part time jobs and have grades parents would be proud of. It is these same children who've been in my home, are respectful, polite, helpful, willing and self motivated to get up every Saturday and Sunday and build jumps. These kids aren't into crack or crystal meth, their high comes from a job done well, the satisfaction of “hitting the jumps.” Isn't that what we want as community members of the future? The drive to succeed, to achieve, be self motivated, face our fears and not rely on the computer games, wallowing in obesity in front of a screen.   There is no alcohol involved during their weekend work-outs, there's no loud music, I'm hoping there's no profanity echoing but I don't believe there is. The boys pack a lunch and take water and head to the foothills to have a day of fun. They come back home at dusk tired, dirty and satisfied. All garbage has been returned with them or disposed of using on site trash bags. I've witnessed this. They're not interested in finding a dealer to get them a fix, or scam someone into buying a bottle of liquor for them. They're not stealing from their families to get a high. They're tired and want to discuss the day's jumping events. And shower, eat, relax and sleep. Start all over again tomorrow. We are lucky to have these youth in our lives.   I'm proud of the many, many people out walking with or without dogs that stopped to watch the events and compliment the boys on performance and remark on how wonderful the building site was. It must of made the boys feel good about themselves to hear these adult's compliments. I say hurray to Stirling's Jumps. I admire these young men. I'm proud to know them…to live a true sense of life and see life is what you make it, not how you ingest it.   I'm disappointed in the way they were treated. Was it not possible to post a sign asking them to contact a city employee to discuss a resident's concern? It only took one person's phone call to destroy hundreds of hours of labor. Fear of teenagers is the underlying problem, fear that precipitated a phone call. It takes a lot of guts to talk to these fearful young men, it's easier to undermine their efforts behind their backs than talk to them directly. Can you imagine arriving Saturday morning, ready for a day of fun and finding your project has been devastated, eradicated, gone forever. Hours and hours and hours of time…gone! What a sad day for these boys! The whole mess could have been resolved through communication, instead of taking the gutless way out and bulldozing the site bare. Maybe now the teens can go buy a bottle or drugs; Then we can sit around the kitchen table talking about the degradation of youth instead of celebrating the pure clean fun they HAD at Stirling's Jumps. |

stirling got there friday after school to do some pre-weekend buffing, then called me at work to say they were gone....they were plowed during the day while we were at school/work

If the towns/cities really didn't want us to build in these spots they should give us a designated area where we can design our own features, or at least get everyone's input on a town-made jump site where we can put in all of our ideas and not have a poorly designed park that has no park etiquette and no logical thought to it. Apparently this is too much to ask.

You should contact IMBA (international Mountain Biking Association), they are passionate about trail building, and should understand you, its easier to get heard when you have the support of some sort of association like this
if they were so worried about kids oding drugs at thoose dirt jumps why the f*ck dont they go to a skate park late at night and see how "good" he people there are , why dont they go and rip down there park because of all the drugs nd what not, but they woudlnt becuase they put the money into the park in the first place so they woudlnt bother

so its the same in canada too, the skatepark i usually ride is full of druggies, drunks and all round dodgy people, even in the middle of the day they hang around, its so annoying always checking up on your bag making sure nothings missing. the government is stupid, there should be some kind of contact with the riders about whats going to happen to thier jumps. the public is stupid too, they just see mountain bikers as dodgy people hanging around causing trouble, so they go calling police/ writing to the council about some bullshit that theyre worried we're damaging the community. they really need to understand what we're really like
now that is pure shame... one must ask where is freedom these days? all is barred with strict observation... drugs are bad and garbage aswell, but they could have made a notice saying to clean up. that is just brutal

That place was NOT "dirty"....No garbage, just perfect jumps. So sad

yer but to get noticed you have to sink to their low level, they wont do anyting about it if your'e polite and carry on how you were.
But the whole point is that the kids who lost out were wrongfully judged to be causing trouble. What would going out to cause trouble do? It'd just reinforce the original, erroneous opinion of the people who originally pre-judged the guys. You cant bully people into thinking you're a decent person. It's like Bush's "peace through war" message - it contradicts itself - and ultimately does not work.
Someone should send that article to the council and let them see what its all about.

Thats upsetting, i think most of us know how gutted you feel, the amount of jumps getting dozed these days is through the roof. The council really neeed to get there act together and talk with the community and the teenagers and most importantly the bikers themselves and im sure a argreement could be made

This is terrible and ignorant. I wish the governments in place would realize that their purpose was to observe the public's reasonable requests (like schooling, healthcare, recreation, etc.). But then they go and find something that was created by the public, for the public, and they destroy it without reason. It's frustrating. Their actions are anti-democratic.

yeah people cant see that we're the "Good Kids". we're not fat and lazy arsehole sitting in front of a tv or computer all day getting fatter and lazier all the time, we're the ones always out there, working for our sport and having fun doing it. Bicycles are Good
VERY VERY well written. we face the same thing here day in and day out. i spent 2 summers with friends building a freeride trail (with easy options around all obstacles for ALL riders) which got only one complaint, that it was destroying the forest, and in they go with bobcats and tear it all down, making a larger impact on the forest then we would in a lifetime.
we just found a new spot now for jumps... hopefully it stays hidden long enough.
strange how there are so many governement agencies promoting youth fitness and they do something like this, leaving youth with nothing after all that hard work.

^sounds like some fr trails I used to ride. Some guy complained because our trails were an erosion problem. Luckily he was appeased and the trails remained open...until 6 months later the bulldozers rolled in and now they are a golf course..."here's your sign"

Just because our sport doesn't require some type of ball and a field with lines painted on it doesn't mean it isn't demanding, challenging, and positive. I bet if it were a football field that had been built, they wouldn't have bulldozed it.

Funny, but they can still rip up sod and nock down posts, remember he's referring to Gridiron, that is american football, not european football. And they would find a way, I'm sure.

that same shit happened to me, only i didn't have as many jumps...
In montreal Quebec, we had these sick dirt jumps...but they got plowed 4 times....now we're building in the trees so no heavy trucks can get to our jumps

The thing is... if they could slap a tax on it or charge you admission then they'd let you keep it for as long as it was popular.
Anyway, hope you manage to get them to see sense and let you build again, if not then best of luck finding somewhere else.

It's extremely unfortunate that the jumps got bulldozed. However, I can't say that I am surprised. This is the way the world is becoming. It's all part of a bigger problem.
People have this attitude that they are so much more important than everybody else. They take up 2 parking spots at the mall because they don't want anyone to touch their Hummer. They cut in front of you in line and treat sales staff like crap because they are in a hurry and therefor more important. You're lucky if you get any sort of customer service at all these days because everyone thinks that they're worth more than $12 an hour pay. Kids spend all of their time planted in front of the TV or on the computer playing video games. Many young adults have terrible social skills because they were brought up by a TV and had stuff handed to them without needing to work for it.
Here are a group of kids that went out and found a great place to build & maintain some jumps. Like the writer said, they aren't drinking, doing drugs, loitering at the malls, getting fat sitting in front of a TV... They are interacting with each other, working together, exercising and having fun. They picked up after themselves, didn't wreck anything or cause any sort of trouble and this is how they are treated. All because of one person that felt that they were more important than everyone else. Sad.

The positive out of this is to stand up as a gentleman like you say you are and approach city council about your need for a jump park in the city. It is a huge long process and will take so much more time that just building another spot, but at least they will not get plowed.

I know exactly how they feel, 3 of our dirt jump spots have been knocked down within the last two weeks and it sucks soo much. we just keep building until they give up!

Correct, the only ones that can be blamed for any ruination of society are those who have the power that are either unwilling to apply it or are ignorant enough to misapply their power, as in this case. And understand when I say ignorant, I don't necessarily mean they're idiots, just misinformed.

This really too bad. What the guys in Kelowna need to is lobby the Muni staff, show them the possitives of having these jumps and point to Whistler where the Muni builds the jumps for the kids right in town. I know that the City of Kelowna is working on a comprehensive cycling plan for the comunity and the DJs should be a part of it. Find out the real reason that the jump got plowed for and deal with it. It sounds like somebody picked a fight. Time to get everyone together and swamp a council meeting with an overwhelming stamp of disapproval. Make your voices heard, don't go down silently. Odds are it was one or two grumpy old man who shut this down by showing up once. If we get 100 riders to speak up, democracy rules.
thats is bullshit. i never went to stirling but those jumps looked awsome. and looked like deticated kids putting hours of work into all the jumps. and now there gone.

That is a big lost for Kelowna that for sure , my advice would be to put pressure in your local newspapers and ask around if anyone around town

as if this totally sucks i live in timmmins ontario and we have the same problem it sucks becuase we put hours and hours into are projects and they just get torn down... whta a shame like we do nothing but ride would they rather us getting into trouble or drugss!!!!!

You have to simply get a petition going, anyone who has ridden there or has watched will sign it. Ask them, what do you want dope heads, boozers or bikers. These jumps keep youth out of trouble by allowing them to apply dedication, integrity, and recreation to their everyday lives.

Better yet lets get rid of that fishing spot, lets destroy that quad trail. See how they like it since they can't quad and then have a peaceful rest waiting for that fish to bite.

if you can get enough people get a petition going, then talk to the city council. i dont really know how it was done, but some of the kids around my place convinced the city to give them an area right beside a fire hall to build jumps, and they got Jay Hootes to come out and build the jumps for the kids.
It sucks that their jumps got plowed, it always hurts to lose a good ride spot. However, this just underscores the need to do things through proper channels. Talk to the land owner, don't know who it is? Look it up at the tax assessor's office/city hall. Ask for permission instead of assuming that nobody will notice. It takes a lot of work to get things done legally, but it's a lot less work than having to rebuild your jumps every year.
I agree with FriedRys. It really sucks to lose a good riding spot, but the suggestion that the decision to plow the jumps was based on character of riders is most likely completely wrong. I'm sure it has to do with land management; land owned by the city municipality. In most cases, when city land has been developed by anybody without the consent of the land owner(s), the city planner will discuss the viability of the land use with the developer. In this case, it seems as though there may not have been a specific "developer". Who would the city go to when rezoning issues come up, or a liability claim were to filed? If nobody takes a leadership role to develop the land in the correct manner, the city is really left with only one option. It would be in the best interest of somebody involved in the building of the original jump park to find out the REAL reason for the destruction of the jumps. It may be a watershed or environmental reason, a land re-zoning issue, or simply (like you have stated) a horrible interpretation of youthful character.
Go to the council meeting, discuss what went wrong, and determine a legal course of action to get a new park up and running. Its a simple process that in most cases the city will approve without much debate. Mike Metzger from Transition bikes is leading the crew for the jump park here in Bellingham, WA. He might have some insight on the right way to get the ball rolling. (and since he's nursing a collar bone break, he might have some extra time to discuss things)

i know the feeling, in singapore there were only 2 decent spots for riding, the one is an average size plot of land on the outskirts of the island, the other was a brilliant location, under an enormous tree. the jumps were awesome. and dozed because the government wanted the land to be ready for a horseriding facility that will be built in approx. 4 years... 4 years!!!!

typical politicians...follow the will of those that can vote....plus they always make snap decisions like that without hearing both sides of the story...I tatally agree with SRH- and what was said about the bigger issue at hand but we as members of the biking community need to do two very important things...
1.) get out to council meetings and the like and support the building and preservation of quality riding areas like this...we need to have each others backs.
2.) We need to show other Non-bikers that mountain biking isn't like skateboarders who go to their park and ride for a bit before sitting around to smoke weed or drink in public...
If we can do this at least a few of these type of issues might be alleiviated..

well i agree wit hthe first part, but not the second, your just stareotyping skateboarders and that is the real problem, ebacuse they do the same thing to us.. they look at us the exact same way
Yeah man, I bike in a skatepark with a lot of skaters, and most don't get high, in fact the BMXers are usually worse for that. But it's still an incorrect stereotype, please don't encourage this, I don't care what it's like in your hometown, please don't judge every skater just by your experience. If you perpetuate this stereotype, then you, me and every other freerider, Street rider, DH rider and finally every Dirt Jumper will get apinted with the same brush. We're all the same in the eyes of the public.
okay..but the same could be said about motocross dudes..or surfers or anybody really...my point was more that youth are being steriotyped beacsue of the 10 kids out of 100 that do dumb stuff like that...what I was trying to say is that mountain bikers (at least any ones that i've met) save all the party for after the ride at the bar...because we all want to ride on the trail and we should have to be dodging beer bottles and other party remains while riding...we need to exemlify this to others so that we can do our part to break that steriotype.

i would of flipped out if i had jumps that nice and the city plowed them,what do they expect us to do. we have all found a great thing we love doing that is active and doesnt harm anyone else and then these a*sholes have to ruin it. I hope you guys find a way to get back at your city council. good luck sucks to hear about your loss
These people who plow jumps and take sledgehammers to stunts are the same people who blame GTA and Manhunt for their messed up kids. People don't want to take responsibility for their children's actions, and therefore blame other things, and since all bikers are OBVIOUSLY pot heads and partiers, an out of the way DJ park that doesn't hurt anyone must be treated like a pedophile training center. Take responsibility for your own actions instead of blaming society, and realize that this park was actually encouraging work ethic, environmental responsibility, excercise and social skills. Yeah, that's totally evil. Jerks.
Wow.... reading this makes me scared to build dirt jumps in my back yard knowing that somebody may make a complaint and get them teared down. Hopefully you guys wioll find a nice/ better place to build some new dirt jumps!
i think that can be done sometimes too, in some communities, if you're yard is seen as untidy and a "mess to the neighbourhood" then neighbours can complain and you might have to tear them down. stupid public, cant see DJs as a work of art (as long as theyre kept in good condition)

God damn.. f*ck these cities man, honestly they build entire parks for skaters, and half the skaters just sit and smoke pot all day anyways, my local skatepark is more of a drug trafficking/ stolen goods market then a skatepark, yet they get it built for them, we go out, do something close to nature, build jumps, be health and active and responsible, we wear helmets and everything, and we get the bad image. Whats wrong with this.
ya know, theres all this government policies to promote youth fitness, keep good health etc. yet when someone actually does something for one of those policies, the goverrnment destroys the work. where i live, people complain about us biking around the town, kick us off places etc, but dont do anything about it. one guy called the cops on us for biking in a forest.. the cops came and we calmly explained our side of it and the cops just went away! they thought we had a good point!
Doesn't it piss you off when the council etc have nothing better to do than ruin peoples fun, it drives me insane!!! Shouldn't they be out solving real problems considering the guys were clearly doing no harm what so ever!!?? somebody give these guys JUSTICE!!

Those jumps were absolutley stellar, they looked almost as if they were for a professional coarse. I can't stand it when know-it all citys and politicians and such, think they are doing good by removing something that actually can do more good for a community that bad just because its a "hang out spot for kids".
Nice looking jumps for sure, I wanted to go ride them. We have the same problem in Vancouver but it's actually worse it's why there are no jumps at all here. People just don't want it around and even if they are up in the middle of the forrest not effecting anyone, they will complain to the city. It's getting harder and harder to have a place to ride.
That's a downright shame that is.
Do like we did when they braught down our dirt, we said "if we don´t get new property for our dirt we can´t ride, then we have to smash windows, fighting, taking drugs."

even though im a religous hater of dirt jumps i feel for the locals as countless times have tracks and good riding spots been destroyed by councils, general public, the actuall trouble makers and even forestry people around my area...things like this actually make me want to get into politics to stop this thing form happening..too bad no one will listen to a bunch of 16 yr olds!

After similar experiences with our unapproved trails in Grants Pass OR. I joined the Citys Bikeways Commitee & just asked for a piece of land for a free ride park & to my amazement was given 11 acres in town. I feel like I walk a thin line of keeping neighbors happy the city liability low & all that BS but miracles can happen sometimes.
wow....thats dumb to just bull doze jumps.....Well just get a huge bunch or riders and go ride street...Then when the cops see you just tell them you don't have anywhere else to ride anymore cuz the took down the jumps...Hahahah But that sucks about the jumps just build them up again and no more partys....
2 of my jump spots in california have suffered the same consequence, it's hard to describe how frustrating and devastating it is.
